1. How androgens affect lipids

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) alter lipid metabolism through several mechanisms:

The change is usually dose-dependent and reversible after the compound is cleared, but some individuals are much more sensitive than others. Genetics, baseline ApoB/Lp(a), body fat, and diet all influence how badly lipids shift.

2. Baseline values and acceptable ranges on cycle

Get a baseline lipid panel before starting any cycle. Do it fasted, in a stable dietary state, and repeat the test under the same conditions.

Practical targets for enhanced athletes:

These are not universal medical targets; they are conservative thresholds for people choosing to use AAS with harm-reduction intent. If you have existing cardiovascular risk, your clinician may want much stricter numbers.

3. Diet levers: fish oil, fiber, saturated fat control

The biggest wins come from what you eat, not from a supplement stack.

EPA+DHA: 2–4 g per day from fish oil or algae oil lowers triglycerides and may modestly improve HDL function. Use a product that shows EPA and DHA content per serving, not just “1000 mg fish oil.”

Soluble fiber: 25–40 g total fiber daily, with at least 5–10 g soluble fiber, binds bile acids and pulls LDL down. Good sources: oats, barley, beans, lentils, psyllium husk, chia, flax.

Saturated fat: Keep long-chain saturated fat moderate. Fatty red meat, butter, coconut oil, and cheese can raise LDL, especially when calories are already high. Prioritize poultry, fish, eggs, olive oil, avocado, and nuts.

Refined carbs: High sugar and refined starch intake can raise triglycerides and lower HDL. Replace them with whole-food carbohydrates timed around training.

Alcohol: Even moderate alcohol can raise triglycerides and worsen HDL/LDL ratios during a cycle.

4. Cardio and donation strategies

Cardiovascular training is not just for fat loss. Regular cardio improves endothelial function, helps maintain HDL, and offsets some of the hematologic stress of AAS.

A practical minimum:

Blood donation lowers hematocrit but does not fix lipid dysregulation directly. Use it as a viscosity-management tool when hematocrit is climbing, not as a substitute for diet and cardio. If you donate repeatedly, check ferritin. Low ferritin causes fatigue, poor recovery, and low motivation.

5. Oral vs injectable impact

Oral 17-alpha-alkylated androgens — such as oxandrolone, stanozolol, methandrostenolone, and oxymetholone — typically crush HDL faster and harder than injectable testosterone.

Injectable testosterone and nandrolone can still shift lipids, but the changes are usually milder and more gradual. Testosterone in therapeutic doses sometimes modestly improves HDL and LDL in hypogonadal men; supraphysiologic doses tend to worsen them.

If your HDL drops below 30 mg/dL while running orals, the safest move is to drop the oral compound and recheck in 3–4 weeks, rather than layering more supplements on top.

6. When to come off or adjust

You should strongly consider stopping or significantly modifying a cycle if:

In those cases, come off, recheck a full panel 4–6 weeks post-cycle, and address the underlying risk factors before running another cycle. A shorter, less aggressive cycle later is almost always smarter than pushing through bad labs.
